Update: We have reached our £60,000 target and are very grateful to every Glass Door supporter who has helped to open a door to a new life this Christmas. £60,000 covers the cost of running all five night shelter circuits for the two-weeks over Christmas, but the shelters remain open throughout the harsh winter months that are yet to come. We still need your support to give vital shelter, support and hope to people in their time of need. Please click above to make a donation today.

James slept on the streets of London before Glass Door helped open a door to a new life. Here, James shares his experience of being homeless at Christmas:

James tells his story

No family around me. No Christmas Dinner. No presents of course.

"The streets were so quiet on Christmas Day and nothing was open. The hunger, the cold and the wet were bad, but the loneliness and isolation at Christmas was overwhelming.

"I stayed in the night shelters for two months while a Glass Door caseworker helped me find a route out of homelessness. Glass Door’s Employability Coordinator, Jay, helped me sort out my CV and apply for jobs.

"Another cold night and I could have been done for. But Glass Door opened doors to me when I had almost lost all hope.

"I have lived in an independent flat for two years and seven months now and I have a job where I work night shifts. I have spent the last two Christmases in my own home.

"Now Christmas is totally different. It feels festive, and I have managed to get back in touch with my family so I can celebrate it with them.

"I know that Glass Door relies on Christmas donations to keep its services open throughout the winter. That is why I am asking if you could make a donation to their Christmas appeal this year. I can think of no greater gift than to give someone else the warm welcome and support that I was given."

I never thought homelessness would happen to me. I am forever grateful to Glass Door for giving me back my life.

Glass Door needs your support to open a door to those who would otherwise be sleeping rough this Christmas. This appeal aims to raise the funds needed to keep our doors open for up to 170 individuals a night over the two-week Christmas period. Our shelters are open seven days a week, without interruption, throughout the holiday period and all winter long.

Your gift can give someone a safe place to sleep and a warm welcome in a church-based shelter.

We aim to raise £60,000 -- the cost we incur in running 14 nights of shelter over the Christmas holidays for 170 people each night.

Please give generously, because no one should have to sleep on the streets of London, especially at Christmas.
