The organisers of the UK-wide Charity Today Awards today announced that Glass Door has been shortlisted for the 2019 ‘Community Impact Award’. This award recognises charities that have 'made a big impact to a community--be that a local community or a specific community of people'. 

Glass Door is one of just four charities from across the entire UK to have made the category’s final shortlist.

UK Charity Week founder Lee Rayment, who heads the judges for the Charity Today Awards, said:

It was incredibly difficult to narrow so many quality nominations down, but we took our time to carry out our due diligence on every single application and we’re satisfied that we have the strongest finals possible.

Glass Door's Chief Operating Officer Lucy Abraham said:

This recognition is a testament to the dedication and good work done by so many volunteers and partners in the community. We are delighted to be shortlisted for this award.

Community solutions 

Glass Door has more than tripled its available shelter spaces in ten years in order to try to meet the rise in demand from a growing number of individuals experiencing homelessness.  The charity could not have done this without the community's involvement, vast teams of volunteers willing to roll-up their sleeves, a growing number of churches opening their doors, and a growing number of community groups raising funds.

Over 1463 volunteers registered and were actively volunteering with Glass Door this past winter. Our volunteer survey indicated that an astounding 100% of the 346 respondents said that they would recommend Glass Door as a place to volunteer or support.

A volunteer recently wrote in the anonymous feedback form:

I think it’s important work, especially given all the privilege so many have in West London. I enjoy doing it, and I genuinely believe that the fantastic work Glass Door do is making a difference to people's lives.

Another volunteer wrote:

It’s such a small thing to do and yet can potentially have a really big impact. I like the way it’s organised, at a grassroots level, and that it’s people helping people.

Charity Today

The organisation behind the awards, Charity Today, run a digital news platform focusing on charities and are the founders of the national charity awareness campaign #UKCharityWeek. The awards were set up to "celebrate and reward true excellence within the sector, awarding the work done by charities and individuals who continue to raise the bar by setting new standards each year."

Winners will be announced on Saturday, 7 September 2019 at the Key Theatre in Peterborough.
