As a homeless charity in London, we witness acts of hope every day

This week at Glass Door Homeless Charity, we’re joining hundreds of other charities, communities and faith groups for A Million Acts of Hope, a campaign launched to bring hope out into the open.

A Million Acts of Hope is a national invitation to celebrate the everyday acts of kindness, care and connection happening across the UK. At a time when division can feel loud, the campaign is bringing together every day acts of hope and shining a light on the people and communities making them happen.

As a local, grassroots homeless charity based in West and South West London, we witness many acts of hope on a regular basis, both big and small.

Our guests securing housing offers...

“They offered me temporary accommodation today. I just wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you for all your help and support in finding me accommodation. I truly appreciate the time, effort, and kindness you have shown—it has made a big difference for me.”

Just to let you know, he has finally been given housing. Overall, he's now settled. Thanks ever so kindly for your unwavering support, guidance, and continued patience.

“I am not worried anymore about where I'm going to spend the night today, where I'm going to sleep. I had almost lost hope because I didn’t know how long I could survive if I didn't find this room. That was the biggest problem, but that has cleared.”

Our volunteers turning up every week, purely by choice....

“It gives me a sense of purpose...it's amazing to see people eat and also have somewhere to rest. I love seeing that because I really don't like injustice. But most importantly we all just have to be there for one an another.”

I enjoy creating community and a safe space for the visitors, as well as getting a chance to connect with people experiencing homelessness.

“We were a team in the kitchen valuing one another and knowing we were making a difference to the guests. It was very special to be part of the team.”

Caseworker receiving a heartwarming thank you note from someone they supported...

“I am moved to write you this letter to express my deep gratitude and recognition for everything you have done for my sister at such moment so difficult and full of uncertainties. Often amongst all the confusion, we cannot stop to acknowledge those who extend us a helping hand and never let go – who help us get up when we no longer have the strength. That is exactly what you’ve done for us.”

I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for everything you did for me when I was homeless. Your kindness and support through Glassdoor made such a big difference in my life, and I will never forget the way you helped me get back on my feet.

“Just to let you know I am extremely grateful for all your help and support during my time in the wilderness. I am back in my old job and universal credit is supporting me with the rent. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for having the patience and understanding to help me navigate through what was one of the most challenging times in my life.”

Or our fundraisers taking on a challenge in aid of Glass Door...

“We’ve been training hard and are really excited to run our race and fundraise together as a team." - Ealing mini mile runners

I loved running for Glass Door, thank you for giving me a chance to participate to Hackney Half Marathon and to use my passion for running to raise funds to fight homelessness in London!

- Lea, Hackney Half runner

“I would highly encourage others to fundraise for Glass Door. Not only do they undertake invaluable work, but they will support you every step of the way.” - Carlos, Edinburgh Marathon runner

Homelessness in London is still very much a pressing issue, and there is plenty of work to be done before our vision of a future without homelessness materialises.

However, it’s important to celebrate all of the wins, big and small, that we’re able to achieve due to the unwavering kindness and support of our volunteers, fundraisers, donors, community partners, colleagues, and more.

Thank you for the hope you offer us and our guests!
