A growing need

The cost-of-living crisis is putting many more people at risk of homelessness. According to the latest CHAIN (Combined Homelessness and Information Network) data, 2998 people were seen sleeping on the streets of London between April and June 2022, an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year, and 48% of these individuals were newly homeless and sleeping rough for the very first time. As temperatures drop, people will have to choose between putting food on the table, paying their bills or the rent.

All indicators are predicting a significant rise in the numbers of people who will find themselves homeless this winter. We are running our emergency night shelters because we know there is a need for them.

"Our shelters will provide a safe, warm and welcoming place to spend the night for those who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets. Through our specialist casework team, we will also provide appropriate support, helping our guests to move on from the cycle of homelessness. ” says Jo Carter, interim CEO.

Glass Door emergency night shelter circuits

On 5th December 2022, Glass Door will re-open our night shelter circuits in London, providing emergency shelter, safety and hope to those who need it the most during the hard, cold months of winter. Our open-access shelters will be open for 16 weeks until 26th March 2023, and will offer a nutritious meal, a safe place to sleep and breakfast to 75 people each night.

The night shelter circuits will run in partnership with churches in London boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Wandsworth. Glass Door caseworkers will work on-site with our shelter guests, supporting them to build their own pathway out of homelessness.

Glass Door night shelters save lives, our year-round support services help to ensure that lives are changed.

We live in an uncertain world, so we remain ready to adapt our plans to the changing landscape, while always putting the interests of our guests at the heart of our decision making.
