The Worshipful the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Gerard Hargreaves, continues his support of Glass Door as his Charity of the Year as he is re-elected for a second term.

Continued support for new challenges

Gerard Hargreaves was re-elected as the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea on 26 May and announced his support for Glass Door for the second year running. The Mayor’s commitment will continue to help support people affected by homelessness in the borough as the long-term impacts of the coronavirus pandemic emerge.

He says:

It has been a real pleasure to work with Glass Door this last year, and I am delighted that they will be my Mayoral Charity again this year. Having provided amazing services during the pandemic, I know that they will meet the new challenges that they face going forward to continue supporting their guests.

Last year's achievements

Despite a challenging year, with restrictions either prohibiting or limiting traditional in-person fundraising events, the Mayor found innovative approaches to raising funds and awareness. Despite the challenges, the team held a Covid-secure Carol Service in December and a virtual raffle. The Mayor and councillors also braved Storm Alex to take part in Glass Door’s annual Sleep Out event.

In total, the Mayor and his team have raised donations and goods valued at £17,564. As well as providing much-needed funds, the Mayor helped secure essential supplies such as face masks. He also visited staff, volunteers and guests at our dinner service to boost morale during a difficult year.

The year ahead

The Mayor says he looks forward to taking part in our annual Sleep Out again and will be looking to host other events in support of Glass Door's frontline work.

Glass Door CEO Lucy Abraham says the support from the Mayor comes at a crucial time:

We are continuing to adapt to the changing needs of our guests during a pandemic, and this support is needed now more than ever. Councillor Gerard Hargreaves’ fantastic community connections and spirit of generosity have added real benefit, as seen through the brilliant funds and awareness raised. We are honoured to be nominated as Charity of the Year for the Mayor’s second term and look forward to a continued fruitful relationship.
