Christmas is all about giving. Below please find our top ten ways to bring shelter and hope this Christmas. 

1. Small acts of kindness

When you meet someone who is homeless, you can help by: 

  • Making eye contact
  • Smiling
  • Having a chat

We believe it's a personal choice whether or not to give money. There are other ways to help: even a smile can let someone know they're not invisible. Offer someone something to eat or drink (but don't assume you know what someone wants or how they like their tea).

You could say: "Sorry, I don't have any change. But I'd like to stop and have a chat. Is that OK?" 

2. Donate or Fundraise

A donation to a frontline charity like Glass Door can help bring shelter and hope to a homeless guest this Christmas and beyond. £23 will sponsor someone for the night in our shelters, which are open throughout the Christmas period.

Host a reverse coffee morning, wear a Christmas jumper all week, hold a bake sale or find another way to fundraise for our Christmas Campaign. Contact us to ask for inspiration and support, and bring shelter and hope to others this Christmas.

3. Vote for your favourite charity

Help your favourite homelessness charity win £1000 of the £120,000 pot available from Ecclesiastical Insurers. To nominate just complete this short form You'll need to insert the charity's number (our's is 1083203). Please ask your friends, colleagues and family to do the same.

4. Shop & dine with organisations that support our work

  • When you buy gifts online, use Easyfundraising, Give as you Live and AmazonSmile to raise donations for Glass Door.
  • When dining out, look for one of the many excellent restaurants that take part in StreetSmart, a charity that passes on donations to Glass Door and other reputable homeless charities.

5. Make a gift box

On 20 December, guests of the Chelsea Methodist Church drop-in will be sitting down for a festive Christmas lunch. We will be giving out gift boxes. Help spread some Christmas cheer by sending in a shoebox. Find out more.

6. Spread the message

Let people know about your support of the men and women who come to Glass Door. Put a tagline at the bottom of your email signature encouraging others to do the same with a link to our Christmas appeal:  "This Christmas, in lieu of Christmas Cards/secret santa gift/etc...  I'm proud to support local homeless charity Glass Door."

7. Support carol singers & Christmas concerts

We are lucky that several groups are supporting Glass Door through concerts and events they have organised in-aid-of Glass Door. Find the latest listings on our Special Events page. Look out for other carol singers collecting for Glass Door in the run up to Christmas. If you want to organise your own group, let us know

8. Volunteer

We usually have stable volunteer teams in place throughout the winter in the night shelters, but take a look at volunteer positions for which we are currently recruiting. 

9. Donate things, but maybe in February

Our guests need clothing, shoes, socks and underwear throughout the year. Do put together items to pass on to someone who can use them, but then hold on to them until space becomes available in our storage. Keep an eye out for updates to our online list of things we currently need and would warmly welcome. 

10. Help connect a rough sleeper to local services

Pass on a "Shelter and Advice" card to someone you think could use the support. Cards available at the entrance of the Chelsea Methodist Church.

Alternatively, download, print and share our Daytime Support Flyer, which shows where individuals sleeping rough can get advice or register for shelter.

You can also find information on local day centres and services on Homeless Link

If you don't have information on local services at hand, ask the person if he or she would allow you to contact StreetLink on their behalf. The details of the location you provide would be sent to the local authority so they can help connect the person to local services and support.
